There are pedals and also foot rests, so when the child is small and can't yet turn the pedals, the "clutch" can be used and the pedals don't turn. My little girl was given the ELC Super Trike as a first birthday present from her grandparents. She loves to be outdoors and was getting fed up of being pushed around in her pram so this fitted the bill as an alternative mode of transport. The Trike is made of sturdy metal and plastic pieces, it does take a bit of time to build so would suggest that this be done before your child spots it on their birthday so as they don't get upset having to wait for it to be ready. It was my daughters second birthday. Grandma and Grandad came in with this big box and she tore off the wrapping paper with great exitement. Then she looked inside, saw a load of pieces and it was given to daddy to make up. Oh goody, another toy to assemble! At least it didn't need batteries or make a loud noise. And the colours matched the ELC swing, sand pit and paddling pool we already had. In all honesty, it didn't take too long before the trike was ready to go.
