Fencing - General

Newest Review: ... I fence epee and don't really know much about the other weapons. If you are looking for a sport to get into in later life, I can't recommend fencing enough. As a weight bearing exercise it is great for bone density (vv important for us ladies) but you can take it as steady as you like. It tones up your legs and butt cheeks which is a definite bonus for me, yet the cardiovasular side isn't as hardcore as say swimming, hockey or jogging for example. The best fencers have excellent CV fitness but I would say if you are taking it up to "stay young", you will stay pretty fit just by fencing and without having to take yourself out... more

Premium Review Fencing - General: Fencing is Fun! (And it doesn't hurt) (415 words)

I took up fencing when I started at Uni, in 1999 (yikes, where did the last 10 years go!!). Like most of you I assumed that everyone who was into this "minority" sport, wore metallica t-shirts and had long greasy hair. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of them around. When hubby and I go to fencing comps (he only watches if there is no football or rugby on) he spends the whole day people watching and laughing to himself at the number of "weirdos". I digress, I fence epee and don't really know much about the other weapons. If you are looking for a sport to get into in later life, I can't recommend fencing enough. As a weight ...  Read the complete review

I never was a fan of the compulsory PE lessons I had to participate in at Grammar School. Hockey was just a nightmare and I was a bit too petite to ever be any good at it considering most of the girls on the team were built like BIG men! So when I had the opportunity to actually choose what sport I was going to endure twice a week, I decided to try something new...Fencing! Some of my friends had already been taking this class and I had heard some good reports. An outside instructor was contracted in to teach us, so I didn't have to put up with the old PE teachers from my school that I didn't particularly like! He was such a lovely gentleman, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Fencing - General: Swashbuckling Fun (558 words)

If you've thought of yourself as a bit of an Errol Flynn or Three Musketeer then fencing is worth a shot for you. Although much of the fencing and sword play in films is a world away from the real sport there is a lot of scope for getting a good old swashbuckle. There are a great many local and national clubs for the sport so don't worry about buying the kit as the clubs can provide for the beginner and amateurs. There are three types of fencing swords and styles to chose from, and you should choose whoch you fancy your hand at (or try them all). 1) Foil - this is the classic french rapier style sword. Very thin ...  Read the complete review

When you here the word fencing what comes to mind? Snobs?, the three musketeers? pansy french blokes in skin tight trousers? well if it does you need a new mind. Modern fencing is an exhilerating, fast paced, strategic, and ultimatly fun sport that can be done by men women or children of almost any age! Another idea that comes to mind when someone like you thinks of fencing might be "ooh I don't know sound expensive", sound familiar? Well expensive it isn't. I too was foolish enough to make that assumption but Chester Fencing Club prooved me wrong! One day when I was at Martial Art classes (Ninpo to be prosice) and our teacher told us all ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Fencing - General: Addicted to Pain? (371 words)

You need to be. I fenced for a few years at university, and was always amazed by how slick and easy it looked. A snap of a foil and a swish of an epee, and a point was scored. I know now why that looked so easy. To fence, you need to be VERY fit. My first session was with a large number of prospective swashbucklers. In line we practiced our stances. I couldn't walk properly for several days. Fencing teaches you what muscles in the legs are really for. They're for hurting.Add to that the pain of being repeatedly walloped with a long piece of metal, and you see the point - no pun intended - of the title of this opinion.
