I used to be a member of fitness first on abercromby place while i was a student in edinburgh and although it is a small gym, it looks like nothing from the outside as it is down in a basement, the facilities are great. it is clean and hygienic, it has classes for those wanting to do aerobics, tai ohi or whatever as well as machines, running, step, bikes and weights of course. I also found the staff to be great, they are always there to help out and will even design a routine/regime for you to follow depending on your level of fitness. I have been a member of Fitness First in Edinburgh for over two years and joined before private health clubs hit the city big time. Good range of quality machines (both weights and cardio), excellent free weights area, but the Edinburgh branch is severely restricted for space and therefore limited to the range of activities they can offer members. No swimming pool, no sauna, no steam room and pretty cramped conditions elsewhere. I've looked around other private gyms in the city and they have a lot more to offer, but you do have to pay a more. £39 a month at Fitnes First compared to £45 ish at other places.
