They may make you look a bit stupid but they are another piece of valuble walking gear. Gaiters come in all shapes sizes and colours but do the same job but to different lengths.

Their general purpose is to keep your feet dry, stop things entering your boots (when walking through heather, some always ends up in your socks) and keep your trousers clean. If you have a long waterproof jacket the need to wear waterproof trousers is also minimalised which makes walking more comfortable.

Usually you zip the garment around your leg, hook it on you laces and tie it beneath your boot.

When walking, mud always works its way up the inside of your legs, but gaiters stop this.

Though not always completly waterproof they certainly keep your feet drier.
