Water-filled Platypus? (Hiking/Walking Equipment in general)
Member Name: yosch
Advantages: Bendy WaterHoldy Technology! Disadvantages: Not quite as tough as a rigid bottle
I have used Platypus waterbags for about three years now. I bought my first one (2.4L) because I needed to carry more water than I could hold with just two 1L Sigg bottles. Platypus bags look quite insubstantial when compared to other similar products like Ortlieb waterbags. I think that for the price difference, even if your platypus breaks after a couple of years you will have to have broken about three of them to make up the cost of one ortlieb. I have found them to be very resilient (I have actually used a full Platypus as a pillow, although I spent the whole night waking and checking to see if my head was wet, which it wasn’t). When empty they collapse into a very small space and can be rolled up and squished into any gaps you may have in your rucksack. I currently own two 2.4L bags and an excellent drinking tube attachments, which I found to indispensable in Spain last summer. Platypus bags are available in a range of sizes from 0.5L to 2.4L for the ‘normal’ style bottles but there is a range of other types of similar carriers available up to 6L for the largest ‘water tank’ model.
