Advantages: long lived, easy to carry, .
Disadvantages: ., ., .
I have a bright red karrimor rucksack I bought it the year before got married 1975 so it is 27 yrs old. I have just got it ready to pack ready to take to Glastonbury. I take it every time I go so I thought I would tell you about it and some of it?s exploits. I seem to remember I bought it in Millets probably in Bradford. I cannot remember how much it was only it seemed a lot of money then, but that was a time when everything was a lot of money to me. As I told you it is bright red! I got red so I would get seen when standing hitchhiking .A safety feature more than a pick up colour. I think it is possibly about a 30-40 litre capacity. It has a zip pocket on the front. It is big enough to put a sleeping bag in A couple of changes of clothes a camping gas stove, basic cooking equipment. Wash kit, I can tie my tent to either at the base of it or to the top Dearly beloved had a bigger rucksack so he usually carried the tent and heavy things. My rucksack has seen many journeys up and down the A1.We hitchhiked everywhere Probably its first outing was to Norththumberland camping nr Bamborough castle then thrown into the back of a lorry on to Hexham camping at the race course .I bought a marble clock from an antique shop in Hexham it travelled proudly in my rucksack chiming every time the vehicle we had thumbed a lift in bounced over a bump in the road. Have memories (a little picture in my head) of me sitting by the side of the road on my red rucksack with my thumb out stretched My rucksack I couldn?t leave it at home it had to go with us on honeymoon! We have a picture of us on our start to married life. In our cheesecloth shirts and jeans starting our honeymoon hitching to France to explore. Our wedding night was shared with my rucksack it made a good pillow we stayed in the grass in the middle of the N10 just outside Paris. It carried all my wedding trousseau (a new pair of jeans at shirt or two) loyally n
ot complainingly It regularly carried my shopping from Morison?s in it?s early years, then from Sainsbury?s We have a car now so it is relieved of these duties also it is showing its age, My bright red rucksack has traipsed the Yorkshire moors and scaled the Buckinghamshire hill?s. When sleepy dormouse was a baby it carried her nappies and changes of clothes on visits to grandma. My bright red rucksack was rescued from a car crash with fewer injuries than I It has been stuffed full of things to help us move house My poor bright red rucksack was now showing its age so I bought a new one a boring blue. Still my trusty red rucksack comes into use It comes with me every time to Glastonbury I hope its tatty looks will encourage thieves to think I have nothing worthwile in it also it says a mud bath can no longer damage its looks. It holds saws and loppers gardening gloves to accompany us on conservation work parties it is a good old workhorse I will describe how it looks now It is no longer a bright red but dull and stained with oil and mud, a few little holes where sparks have hit it The straps are still intact a few loose threads The frame is still shiny but lost a rubber stopper of one of the ends. overall tatty looking but still functional I think it will see a few more Glastonbury?s yet I have enjoyed writing this has brought back many happy memories I have shared with my rucksack I do not think this model is made any more but I think the fact it has survived so long is brilliant I would be happy to buy other karrimor equipment. Modern day cost abot £60-£70 for similer Happy hiking Thanks for reading Congrats if you read it all. Now I will post this and read some of your opps

- 08/07/02 Can't believe I didn't notice this op in your profile before, as I'm intending to buy a Karrimor backpack! Costs about £80 for a 55 litre one designed for women though, but might be worth it if it can last 27 years lol!
BTW thanks for the advice - one of my friends offered to lend me money/wallet belt to carry all my cash, cards, documents etc, not sure how they'll all fit under my small tops though :) |

- 27/06/02 Obviously a very well loved item! A great make too - no wonder it has lasted. |
