LP Extreme Ankle Support
Advantages: avoids crutches and a cast, comfortable, good support, one size, easy to apply and remove,
Disadvantages: doesn't fit in most shoes
Amazon sellers and Amazon both sold an array of ankle supports and I knew I needed something with the straps that cross over the foot for secure support which narrowed it down a bit but still left me a bit confused about which one I needed. A seller called "Sugar Ray's Boxing Limited" had this LP Extreme Support priced at £13.05 including free delivery so I finally ordered it. Anticipating days of waiting I was very pleased with the seller (and the reason I've mentioned them by name in this review) for getting the support delivered to me in 2 days. Thanks guys!
The support comes in a clear plastic box with a leaflet that tells us it's made using Coolprene and Coolmax, I'd never heard of them either. Coolprene is breathable and then covered in Coolmax to keep skin dry and comfortable, both names are trademarks. There is also stretch nylon as part of this support. The actual support is black, it's a one size fits all which worried me a bit and it looks like a stretched out figure of 8 with a hole in the centre and two slim straps attached. The inside is like a quilted smooth material and each strap on the main body of the support has a tab of velcro at one end and both the supporting straps have one too. There is an LP logo on one section and that's the only way I can tell which way up it goes! The logo goes on your ankle rather than your foot so that's a helpful addition.
To use you place the support on the floor or the bed with the logo section towards your ankle then place your heel in the hole and wrap the straps below that over the top of your foot then the straps above the hole around your ankle, the velcro just attaches to the actual support which is how there's no sizing involved. Then take one slim strap and wrap it from one side of the foot to the opposite side of the ankle then do the same with the other to make a cross on the front of the ankle. This gives good firm support. To wash the strap must be handwashed in cold water with mild soap then left to air dry flat which is fairly usual for supports of any kind.
I found this very easy to put on but if you have a sprain it's a good idea not to push your foot into it to tighten the straps or it hurts! I was having alot of pain with pointing my toes which is very common as a ligament that runs from the outside of the ankle to the top of the foot is frequently involved in sprains, for this reason I made sure I tightened the support with my foot at 90 degrees to my ankle to stop me being able to point my toes very far. The inner quilted material is very soft and comfortable and the velcro stays put and needs no tightening through the day. It isn't advised to sleep in the support but I did a couple of times when my pain was at its worst and had no problems doing this.
I got immediate relief from this support and while I could still feel the pain it wasn't anywhere near as bad once I had this on. I wore it both directly next to my skin and over a sock and found it worked as well both ways. The only time I took this off for the first few days was to have a bath and at no point did it make my foot sweat so the "breathable and keeps skin dry and comfortable" claims are both true. I didn't need to limp anymore with this on and it allowed my ankle to move just enough to walk but no more than that. Limping is very bad for anyone but particularly bad for someone like me as it can knock all the joints in the leg, hip and pelvis out of alignment.
I'm actually still wearing this during the day because I'm still having some problems with pointing my toes but it does take me rather a long time to heal so I'm not surprised. It's helped enormously though and saved me from the horrors of a cast and crutches again! The only problem I've had with it is shoes. I have one pair of boots this will fit in so I can wear it out but that's it, it doesn't fit in any other boots or shoes I own except my slipper boots. I don't have any trainers but if you intended to use this for sport you'd want to try it on inside your trainers to see if it fits.
It's a really excellent ankle support though that has kept me up on my feet even with a bad sprain which of course prevents the complications from a cast and crutches. It's warm and comfortable but doesn't make my foot sweat, easy to put on and take off and washes fine too as long as you follow the instructions. As for being one size, I'm a size 5 with slim feet and this fits me fine but if you had really tiny feet or really huge flippers you'd want to try it on before you buy one, for anyone in the average range this will be fine. I'm not deducting a star for it only fitting in one pair of boots as this is to be expected and it's done such a great job of allowing me to keep walking on that ankle while it calms down I'm giving it a full 5 star rating.
Summary: Highly recommended
