Advantages: Comfy and breathable
Disadvantages: None for me!
I have suffered with ankle problems ever since I was a teenager, and sprained my left ankle really badly playing football. It seems as though I get a flare up of some sort in that same ankle at least two / three times a year now, and I have become increasingly frustrated with visiting the doctors, only to be constantly told that it is just a sprain, or raised tendons, and the only thing to do is rest it, and keep it strapped up. The pain is really severe, and I often have to hop around when it is at it's very worst, and take Ibuprofen to relieve the pain a bit.
I have therefore used lots of ankle supports, bandages, and straps over the years, and I did have a very good York ankle strap which had served me well for the last 3 years or so, but it has gone missing during a recent house move!
Recently, I stupidly agreed to join a couple of friends on a local fun run - called the killer mile (it is certainly not fun!) which is taking place at Mow Cop in Staffordshire next week, and so I made the decision a few weeks back that I would have to purchase a new ankle strap to help get me through the practicing and the run itself.
As mentioned before, I have had a whole manner of straps and bandages over the years, but the adjustable straps seem to work best for me, because obviously they are adjustable to fit each individual ankle, and also they are a lot less painless to put on and take off compared to a sock style support.
I purchased my LP Extreme Ankle Support from Amazon (using some spare vouchers that I had), as it looked similar to the York one that I had previously owned. It cost me £13 which is pretty much in-line with most other straps, and this particular one came with free delivery.
It is basically a black strap support which is constructed from coolprene which is a breathable, stretchy material, along with a covering in coolmax, which is a soft and comfortable material aimed at helping to support and protect the ankle.
It is simple to put on, by simply placing your heel through the open hole, and wrapping the Velcro straps around the ankle and securing them at the opposite side.
~~~ My Opinion ~~~
I think I have dropped on to a very good ankle strap with this extreme support from LP. I never really expected it to be as good as my previous support, but I would say that so far I think it is even better. It is simple to put on, and easy to secure, without causing much pain to the delicate throbbing ankle areas. This design of ankle straps is very common nowadays, with both the toes and the heel areas exposed to allow full flexibility in the foot, and to eliminate rubbing on the foot, whilst increasing the air circulation to the area.
I find it out performs my old strap in terms of wearing it under a sock, as my other one used to often need re-tightening towards the end of the day, but this one stays nice and tight, with no obvious movement. It also seems to be a snugger fit underneath the sock, compared to my old one, which must have been bulkier, as it was always difficult to put a shoe or trainer on if the strap was being worn under a sock.
Overall it seems to be a fantastic ankle support, which is very comfy to wear, and the material construction is actually very breathable, reducing the sweaty, smelly foot inside the strap that I have witnessed with other straps so many times. It is washable by hand wash only, and I have done this several times now with no problems and no visible reduction in quality to the strap or the Velcro ties.
I have now jogged / walked the killer mile about a dozen times using this strap, and up to now (touch wood) I have not experienced any pain, swelling, or throbbing in my ankle of any kind. This gives me great comfort that this strap is both supporting and protecting the weakness in my ankle.
Definitely recommended by me.
Thanks for reading.
