I bought this lock for £25 from Halford, as it looked quite robust and easy to carry. Well my opinion is that I wasted my money. They really should ban cable locks like this because they do not pose a problem to a potential thief.

I locked my mountain bike up to a lamp post and popped into a few shops. When I came back, the lock was cut, but thankfully someone had seen what was happening and had scared the guy off and was standing by my bike... thank goodness there are some nice people in the world. So, they hadn't tried to crack the combination (that would be silly and take too long). What the lady described was some sort of hand tool, quite big though. So I am guessing that it was a heavy duty cutter. Straight through the cable.

The only advantage the lock has is no keys and that you can get it around the frame, one wheel and post quite easily. It may be a slight visual deterrent, but for £25 there are better locks available. For example the Magnum or Kryptonite U-Locks are pretty good and come with insurance too.

My theory is, get a lock that is one the approved list of your insurer so you are covered. Then, don't leave your bike out of sight or at least leave it where there is security CCTV in use. I now use a Kryptonite lock with a couple of cables around my wheels, but this is only when I stop for a drink and I can always see my bike, or the general area in which it is left. If someone wants it though, they will come prepared and get it.
