Advantages: Wont let you down, gore tex, waterproof, superior build, look great
Disadvantages: expensive
I have recently returned from six months backpacking around Australia and before I went I bought what was the most expensive pair of shoes that I have ever bought- a pair of Merrel Chameleon Wrap Slam GTX walking shoes.
Being new to this I had never bought a pair before and was baffled by the amount of choice that I had, however, after reading many reviews it appeared that generally Merrell came out as one of, if not the best in making walking/hiking shoes. It was for this reason that I decided to go with them and spend big just to get it right.
I then managed to narrow it down to a few that I wanted, however, it was quite difficult to find anywhere that sells a good range, I only managed to find them in Millets and Blacks and both places only stocked certain styles.
As I was looking at spending what i consider a lot of money on shoes I wanted to ensure that they were correct, so asked at Millets and tried a few pairs on. Eventually i decided on the pair and bought them.
I have to admit that although they set me back alomst £90, they are one of my most used and better purchases and are a must for any traveller!
I think that they look really good, as you can get different colours you are bound to find a set that you like. Next, the performance; i did lots of hiking, conservation work, manual labouring and each time i wore these shoes. They are so comfortable, it feels as if you are walking on cotton wool. These particualr ones were waterproof which i felt was imperative, but I was unsure, so decided to stik my feet in the sea and to my surprise, they stayed completely dry. Lastly, they are Gore Tex, which i think is the GTX part of the title, and this means that they are breathable. I found that after wearing them for this amount of time they did smell, which isnt unexpected, but usually after a few wears my shoes would be smelling, and these were just like new.
Overall I am very pleased with these and would reccommend these to anybody. I am now looking at buying a pair of trainers from Merrell as i am so impressed!
Summary: Despite the price a pair of Merrells are essential for any traveller/hiker, or just for general use!
