Advantages: Dazzling skills and great entertainment - where the best players in the world play
Disadvantages: The league needs a new superstar
NBA basketball is great entertainment and having watched it on television I am disappointed that I have not yet been able to get to a game on my visits to the States. For the majority of the time the players are big guys, but they need to be skillful. It is no good being over seven feet tall if you cannot catch, shoot, position yourself and anticipate what will happen. I started to follow the NBA in the late 1980s, just when Michael Jordan was beginning to dominate the league. Being more superstitious then I supported his team, the Chicago Bulls, as I was a Taurus. It became great fun watching Jordan and Co. take apart the league in the 1990s as the Bulls went on to win six championships. The players in the NBA really know how to entertain and this is promoted. Some of the acrobatic dunks are great to watch and consequently fast breaks are always welcome. Interestingly in the NBA some rules are different to try and promote scoring, such as a the rule which prevents zone-guarding (which is prevalent in European basketball). The league has suffered a bit in recent years. The was an owner's lockout which prevented the season starting on time in 1998 and with Jordan's retirement the league is crying out for a new superstar (which seems to be where Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors fits in). Interestingly it appears that an influx of foreigners in the NBA is improving the world standard in Basketball. The Americans did not win the Olympic Gold medal all that easily and could have easily lost to Lithuania on two separate occasions. However the standard of basketball in the NBA remains high. It is where the best players in the world earn their corn, thrill the fans and keep the TV audiences captivated. The players earn huge money, but boy do they put on a show.

neba - 20.11.01 You should pick up a game in the States. Visit a city like Boston where the games hardly ever sell out as the Celtics haven't dominated the league since the days of Larry Bird. They are playing much better this season though. Great op! |
