Advantages: fun, meet people

Disadvantages: none

I have played girls netball at school since I was 11 and I have always found it to a fun way to keep fit and I have made some good friends playing for various teams.

When I came to university I was keen to keep going but didn?t want to play for a competitive university team. I think that environments like that can get a bit bitchy and it is a big commitment. The university also had a group who played mixed netball, and so I joined that and have found it to be a really refreshing way to play the game.

There were girls and also quite a lot of guys who played. A lot of the men were men who had been brought up on basketball and have a different style to the way girls are taught to play at school. This makes it more interesting to play.

Plenty of beginners also had a go and it is easy to pick up the rules. I will give you a basic outline now.
There are seven members on a team, and each position has slight limitations as to where they can play.
The court is split into three sections.

The two end thirds have the attack and defence in. There is a goal shooter (GS) and goal attack (GA). There are marked by the defence of the other team ? the goal keeper (GK) and goal defence (GD) respectively. The GS and GK are only allowed in the attacking third. The GA and GD are allowed in the attacking and centre thirds. Then there are two sets of wings. Wing attack (WA) and wing defence (WD) They are allowed in the attacking and centre thirds as well, but they cannot go into the semi circle in the attacking thirds, as this is the only place players are allowed to try and shoot. The only player then left is the centre (C). The centres can go in all the thirds, but not the shooting circles.
This seems complicated I realise but it only takes a minute or two to pick it up when you are playing. The only other rules to remember are that it is non contact, you can only hold the ball for 3 seconds, and you cannot run with the ball, you must
keep your landing foot still once you catch the ball.

Netball is played at a fast pace, because you cant run with the ball it tends to be passed quickly to another people and there is a lot of running involved. A standard adult game is 4 quarters of 15 minutes each, and that is certainly enough for me to get a good work out.

Playing mixed netball has a relaxed atmosphere and it is now being played at more and more universities. There are also men?s teams now in some places. It also has a huge social benefits and I have made some great friends and had some great nights out, and plenty of girls i know have found boyfriends!!.

Playing in this format means that it is a relaxed way to play sport where nobody takes themselves too seriously and everyone can enjoy netball as the good fun game that it is. I would recommend it to anybody who finds it is run at his or her university. We have played other uni?s and it has been really good fun. It doesn?t matter how much experience you have had of netball before, that is the point. You can learn how to play and have a good time too.
