Advantages: Excellent fit, stand-out looks, good cushioning, good for most sports

Disadvantages: Hard to find nowadays

As a keen athlete, I always find it is worth buying the best trainers you can find. They invariably pay off in the long run (excuse the pun), and prevent a number of injuries from flaring up. A lot of the trainers sold nowadays are meant only for casual wear, and are not really suited to use in sports.

I have always been a big fan of Nike's running shoes. In fact, I very rarely buy any other type of trainer now, so well do I know the characteristics of their shoes.

The Nike Air Huarache is my all-time favourite trainer. Originally released in the early 90's, it was at the time revolutionary in its design. At this time, the concept of an air bubble in the sole was still quite new. The unconventional styling of the shoe still attracts a lot of attention. The upper part of the shoe is built around a sandal type structure - it sounds odd, but works very well in practice. The straps of the "sandal" hold a sock trainer, which fits the shape of your foot perfectly.

The shoe is one of the brightest you will see, with a white lower, and blue and green sock.

The shoe is the most comfortable I have worn, as the sock part adapts to fit your foot perfectly. The trainer is quite substantial, but is much lighter than most other cross trainers. I like to wear a light trainer most of the time, but these are perfectly acceptable. The cushioning is very good, and the shoe provides a lot of support around the sides.

One of the most notable thing about Nike's trainers is the high arch in the insole. This is ideal for me, but may be less suitable for people with flatter feet.

I have owned 4 pairs of these trainers over the years. I still have my original pair, which still fit me like a glove (mixed metaphor?!). Nike rereleased the trainer again recently, and I was lucky enough to snap up a new pair. Hopefully this pair will still be going strong in 10 years time - there aren't many trainers tha
t could last that long, and still be as comfortable as when they were bought.

I often wear trainers, but I hope that does not mean that I have got to start running anywhere!
