Being reviewed here is Nike composite shaft, used with several different heads throughout the years. Back when I started playing wooden hockey sticks was what everyone used, they didn't change much apart from curve in the blade and the pattern on the shaft, these cost between £17-£35 (depending on brand and endorsement). Then came the composite shafts, now the advantage of these were (unlike the wooden ones) when the head broke (which they often do) you could slot in a new head and be playing within minutes, however you could pay up to £100 just for the shaft, and another £30 for the head. I feel I need to write about these as one nearly cost me my lower teeth on training last Saturday. Our Goalie was wielding his massive stick (oo er) and caught me across the lower jaw with the side of it. Opened my chin up like a tin can with Claret going everywhere. Anyway, enough of my injuries, on with a description of the different types and style of goalie stick. To go in between the pipes with small vulcanised rubber being aimed at your head is insane. INNOVATIVE is a small US company that has patents on a POLARFIBRE GRAPHITE COMPOSITE that they use in their hockey sticks. The shaft is a GRAPHITE and GLASS FIBRE combination matrix. The resulting material is very extremely stiff and therefore provides a very stiff composite shaft. Unfortunately they do not offer the wide range of stiffness and designs that other more established manufacturers do. They have decided to focus on NICHE markets within the UNITED STATES without a NICHE PRODUCT.
