I first played Petanque when on a school trip to Normandy in France about 8 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is similar to boules, but is usually played on a funny dirt / gravel surface which is rather odd. The aim of the game is to throw your metal balls as close as you can get them to a smaller wooden ball called a cochonnet or 'jack' which is first thrown into the middle of the playing area. It can be played by two, four or even six people and the winners are decide when all balls have been thrown. Petanque is favoured by wrinkly, smoking, cocky french campers. Don't misunderstand me, I am not bitter at losing every 'fun' campsite based competition. Ooh no, It is just that I now realise its sinister underbelly. I believe Petanque is just a front for an international organisation supplying narcotics and 'adult' services to the rural communities. The high stakes nature of Petanque is synonomous with money laundering as dirty cash can be distributed through a complex multi-tiered prize scheme. Petanque is a game where a player of one team throws the pig (small ball) down the straight. Other players then have to try and get their big balls as close as possible to it, trying to knock the opponents out of the way. The sport takes a lot of getting used to, as hitting the balls out of the straight can be quite demanding, especially for the beginner. The first shot known as rolling in is where the pig is thrown about halfway down the green and then rolls the rest of the way until it stops.
