Petzl have been making exceedingly good mountaineering gear for a while now. To my mind they are one of the best technical climbing, potholling, spalunking technical gear companies. But their gear is so good that allot of expedition climbers like myself use their gear as well. The down side is that , along with Black Diamond they are perhaps the most expensive to buy gear from.
I have this headlamp that I use on shorter expeditions becuase the light is hugely bright and it has a headlamp bulb and a duo feature more modern LED headlights, but because of this duo feature it makes it heavier then the traditional single bulb or LED headtorch. The Duo is great for outdoor enthusiasts who are fed up with LED headtorches not doing the business and not being bright enough and is water proof down to 5 meters for all the caving and spalunking guys, and of course if its snowing for all the moutaineers. You can use either the LED for one the moon is up, and you dont need that much light, but if its snowing or you need a bit more floodlight power, turn on the main bulb and your talking.
Being Petzl its a robust build and its sturdy. I have dropped mine a few times, sometimes even on the bulb shield and it is sturdy and only has a few very small scratches on it. There is only one button. the on/off switch, which has a locking mechanism so the light doesnt jump on when its in your bag and wear out your batteries. The light itself has a tiltable and so you can tilt the position of the light angle to meet your needs as you use it. Naturally as a headtorch it has an adjustable elastic headband, which is grey and orange in colour, that you can adjust to fit your head and it seems strong and robust and would take a very long time to wear down or lose elasticity. The torch takes in 4 AA / LR6 batteries (which are included initially). Or you can get the Duo E65100 2 which takes both batteries and has a rechargeable battery pack which I think is great, adds to the weight...again butits handy as a substitute.
The guys at Petzl have thought of everything and as well as replacing batteies, especially as is the case with bulb and not LED head lamps, but the bigger bulbs naturally do break and there is a compartment for a space for a spare halogen bulb at the front of the torch. This is a great feature as you may need it in an emergency and if you dont have one, thats a problem, but although its great for that, it also just adds to the weight...only a few grams, but hey im picky. The torch comes with a three year guarantee in case it does break unnecessarily.
So I use this on shorter expeditions as the weight is huge - 300 grams, spare bulbs and rechargable batteries packs, 4 batteries all add to that.
The guys at Petzl have also thought of aftermarket and you can buy very cool but expensive accessories separately, like a battery charger and rechargable pack, car charger and helmet clips so that it the torch doesnt slide off easily, but in my experience most lamp headbands are both tight and strong and so only the sturdiest of hits dislodges it,maybe in caving it happens to dislodge more because your head will naturally hit rock ceilings allot more.
I am planning to walk the West Highland Way next year, which stretches from Glasgow to Fort William. It is a total of approximately 90 miles which I hope to do over 6 days. Obviously being well equipped is essential and I bought this head torch in case darkness comes down whilst still out on the hills (hopefully not)! The Duo 5 LED head torch is perfect for all outdoor activities and is water-proof down to 5 metres. It is sturdily constructed and has a dual light source which can adapt the lighting to different needs.
The torch has an adjustable elastic headband making it very comfortable to wear. The on/off switch can be locked to prevent accidental operation and the light body can be tilted to position the light just where you want it. There is even space for a spare halogen bulb to be stored in the housing of the head torch.
It is grey/yellow in colour with a black band. A spare halogen bulb is included and the torch operates on 4 AA / LR6 batteries (included) or with the ACCU Duo E65100 2 (optional). The latter is a rechargeable battery pack which I opted for as it is handy as a backup. The weight, including the batteries, is 300g.
There are various accessories you can purchase separately -
Rechargeable battery pack
Helmet clips which stops the headbands slipping off when used with a hard hat or climbing helmet
The torch comes with a 3 year guarantee.
