Advantages: Big Hitter
Disadvantages: None
Hitting long distance shots was always my weakness when playing a round of golf. It actually wasn't achieving the distance which was the issue - it was the fact that when driving to around the 270 - 290 yard mark, my accuracy was way off.
I would loose many a ball as a result of a hook, or more likely a slice, which would send my ball way over the treeline out of bounds.
Now I realise that these wayward shots are the result of a swing fault rather than poor equipment, but a better driver can really help minimize golfing errors, and this is where the 'Ping G5' has helped my game no end.
I was previously using the Callaway 'Big Bertha Steel Head III', which was in fact an excellent easy hitting club - albeit in the now outdated smaller head driver category. The change to the G5 made a big difference.
The G5 driver is the update to the G2 driver which is a tried and tested golf club. As such, the two clubs look very similar, with only a slight cosmetic update for the G5. It is however, the internal mechanics which have revolutionized Pings newer model.
Apparently, the weighting has been repositioned to give an increased solidity when striking the ball. You can really feel like you're getting a lot from the club, even if you don't make contact in the center of the 'sweet-spot'.
The difference in distance from my old club to the G5 has been quite astonishing. Before, on a flat windless day, I would usually hit out to around 270 / 280 yards, whereas now I can comfortably acheive distances of around 300 yards plus.
Mistakes (e.g hitting across the ball) are minimized, and although the result will still be a hook or a slice, the results aren't as dramatic, and will save me quite a few strokes per round.
Overall, the Ping G5 Driver has been a revelation to me, and I would recommend all golfers giving it a go, or Pings newer model the 'G10'.
You can pick up a G5 from eBay for around £80.
Summary: Beautiful Club
