There has been a recent clamp down on checking for IRB labels in protective items of clothing in the rugby league recently. This label is proof that the IRB have approved the wearing of the specific item of clothing for safety wear. The referees have been asked to check the players clothing for labels before each match, but, in cup fixtures, the referee may only ask to see three labels from body armour, and three from head guards, which defies the point of having the label in the first place, as there may only be three in the team with labels... This opinion is about the protective clothing being worn by many youngsters in sport of Rugby! Since October you have had to have a label with IRB on it. This ruling applies for scrum caps and shoulder pads! I know about this as I am a Rugby player. I have never worn protective clothing but my team mates do. So If your child is buying protective clothing for Rugby, make sure it has the IRB sign in it. Many people have complained about this ruling but it is for the players safety!If the players have different clothing on which is not IRB,it could be unsafe for not only themselves but for the opposition as well! Many of you may already be aware that since October 2000 any protective clothing used by Rugby Union players MUST carry a recognised IRB label (a bit like the washing instructions found in every day clothing). Can anyone explain why this is so? As a large prop forward with lots of stamina if not fitness (see Ice Cube's notes on Rugby Laws) I have a fair amount of natural padding and therefore do not need to have more provided for me. But it has amazed me that the powers that be in rugby have made a decision, albeit some time ago, that all exisiting protective clothing would become redundant at a seemingly random date mid-way through a season. ...
