what type of bike should you use? well we have all seen people cycling around the town on a mountain bike, but wait, where's the mountains? seriously though mountain bike were designed for mountains, for going round town you should realling be using a racer, it is designed for roads, the thin tyers reduce friction which makes cycling eaiser. now you don't have to go buy the best bike you can, that will cost you a few grand, but you can pick up some decent ones very cheaply. should you have your feet locked in though, it's not nesseary thats for the pro's to stop there feet falling out at 30 mph which can hurt, trust me, but for going at 10 - 15 mph you just need normal pedals

Don't forget the half-way houses... racers are all very well, but it seems that they are becoming more and more specialised and with it more and more expensive to buy a new one. A hybrid bike has features of mountain bikes and racers-for example, thinner wheels than MTB as you mention, but are far more affordable and allow a certaind degree of non-road riding should that be your desire in addition to riding around town...

To clip or not to clip? I think we would all have to agree that the days of the toe clip / strap are long behind us (horray) but modern SPD type cliples pedals (I use VP's) are so easy and reliable that I wouldn't ride without them. I've been thrown off by having a foot slip off the front of a pedal (at about 10 mph going up a hill) and vowed never to ride without some sort of clip again. You can go clipless for less than £60 (including shoes) and if you choose with care the same system will do for all your bikes (road, race, mountain etc.)
I have to have some sympathy for the the MTB city riders - the roads in Edinburgh are so chewed up at the moment that every puddle can hide a monster crater - at least the ATB doesn't puncture as it hits the other side of the hole!

Ride safe
