I know, referees are not part of the equipment. But could we play the game without them?

I just thought that I would venture this opinion about referees following the injury to Robbie Paul at the weekend. While football is trying to copy league with the ten yard rule and protect referees, I am a bit worried about the way things are going in our great game.

It seems that referees are now afraid to take action on the field for acts that are little more than thuggery. Is it any wonder when the judiciary just don't back them up though.

I still remember the Wigan v Leeds game last season when Adrian Morley took out (I've forgotten his name, now captain at Halifax!), and that was in the first minute of the game.

How many times have players got away with serious foul play, something needs to be done. Also the players need to start respecting the man in the middle again.

The guys have a really hard job to do, and I know that I couldn't do it, the first time I ran the line at my daughter's football match I was verbally abused by opposing spectators!

So remember guys, respect the man with the whistle, and it is only the captain that can ask him why he has made a decision.
