Advantages: Great hobby

Disadvantages: Can be expensive

I love sailing, and will soon be moving into a shared house from my lovely apartment to try and save up enough money to buy a dinghy and keep myself sane for the next couple of years! The boat I'll go for will undoubtedly be a Laser. An olympic class single-hander, it's a bit more like a giant ironing board with a sail than your traditional boat, but they go like stink when you've got a bit of a breeze.

As well as this, I'll carry on using my trusty sailing gear. Most of what I have is made by a company called Gul, mostly because it looks pretty cool, wears well, and is reasonably priced. There are specialist sailing brands like Musto or Henri Lloyd, but these tend to be a bit more expensive, and are favoured by them yacht sailors!

I've got a full wet suit for that spring / summer changeover period, and when it gets towards winter I'll probably opt for a dry suit, costing about £280 it means I'll be able to continue sailing during the winter when everyone else is inside and missing the best of the wind. I get most of my kit from Force 4 chandlery, who are based on the south coast and do mail order. Failing that, purple marine is worth a look as well as they have some decent gear in usually.

In the summer, the best time for a good sail and a barbie after, you'll see me flashing my pale legs and wearing just a shortied wetsuit, boots, gloves, and a buoyancy aid. Good times!

Sailing doesn't have to be expensive, you can pick up some very good cheap second hand kit, and if you do your shopping in the sales (out of season - try November or January) then you can get some serious bargains.

Try Decathlon for awesome end of line ridiculously cheap but excellent quality sailing togs. They don't have an enormous range but ehat they do have is extremely well priced.
