It is touted as being very good for Iliotibial Band massage but if your IT bands need massage chances are they will be too painful for you to endure this. It is eye-wateringly painful if they are tight or contain adhesions etc so be warned!
Also the product can allegedly be used on the external hip rotators (piriformis etc) but I think it is too imprecise for this area and a smaller item should be used instead.

These foam rollers come in various lengths and circumferences and serve 2 purposes. The purpose displayed in the picture is to provide an unstable surface for core stability exercises, much the same as wobble boards and stability balls so no mystery there and yes, they are very unstable! The second purpose is to provide myofascial release of the muscles, fancy pants term for massage with a slight stretch of muscles (myo) and fascia (fascial).
