Advantages: Good all over work out
Disadvantages: routines can be complex
Having not been to a step aerobics class for about 5 years I decided (god only knows why?!?) that I would go along to my local leisure centre to take part in a class. I thought I had co-ordination and style but I was put to shame by the other women.
The instructor was very friendly and approachable, before the class she asked if I was new, whether I'd done step before and whether I had any pre-existing injuries or medical history that may affect me in the class. I'm sure this was more for health and safety insurance purposes than it was for my well being but it certainly made me feel welcome and assured that I was in the hands of a professional.
The class started with a warm up and some stretches, the instructor explained what each stretch was for and why it was important we did them, we then moved on to some low level steps to continue the warm up, nothing too complicated (even for me), the instructor was very good at explaining what was coming next and demonstrating the move before the step moved on. The class then moved up a pace and it's fair to say I totally lost it. For someone who hadn't done step for 5 years I was really really lost. The instructor though was fantastic and demonstrated both the basic and normal steps so I was able to participate with the basic steps without attempting what seemed to me much more complex routines. I was really impressed with her commitment to ensure that I was involved, rather than leaving me scratching my head, although that did happen a few times.
The class then incorporated some abs work, and she really pushed us at this point. Each time demonstrating and explaining each exercise, also coming round the class to ensure we were doing each one properly. A gentle cool down followed the abs work out.
The class was one hour long and cost £3.95, I thought that was really good value for money. Even though I got confused at times and stayed on the basic steps I still left feeling like I'd had a really good work out. I'm looking forward to learning more of the routine next week!
