Advantages: Cheap & affordable

Disadvantages: If not in a club, finding an opponent!

For most people having a knock about "ping pong" game is easy. Anyone can play and it apparently few skills, or so people think.
Tabletennis is actually quite techincal. It requires good eye and hand co-ordination, gives a good aerobic workout, cheap euipment for the beginner and is great fun.
Things to think about.
Balance & movement. The average social player may not think about footwork & balance but you will find that by side stepping without crossing your feet over gives far better balance and you will find that you can recover to play your next shot before your opponent has had time to hit his/her return shot to you.
Ever seen someone play with their freearm dangling by their side? Using both arms while playing is useful. One arm obviously has the bat but the other one can be used to help with balance, guage direction or to help give power to a shot.
Position to the table. Where you stand in relation to the table is important since it affects the shots you can play. Shots can vary dramactically. There's topspin, sidespin, drive shots, loops, block, push shot, backspin and there can be combinations of that. It's a great game and doesn't cost much to start off. There are junior and senior leagues all over the place. Go on have a go!

Trixi - when I first started playing - I was with a coach who would have us all do really boring stuff like footwork. Half an hour just playing the shots without a ball while the coach called the shots. So boring - until you come to a game it's close and you go through the motions just to tighten your game. The more you practice AT ANYTHING the more stuff you do without even thinking. Footwork was always boring, we always hated, but when you get to be a good player you realise why HE is the coach and YOU are there to do what he says.
