Advantages: fun, excercise, competitive
Disadvantages: none
I have been a table tennis player for 7 years now, and I can honestly say it is the best game I have ever played. Even from the early days as a begginner to now, when I am a serious player in the local Senior league I have found it to be fun, and exhuasting. Many people assume as the space of play is so small that you can not get tired playing, well try it and you will see just how tiring it is. Fast forehand rallies with speed and accuracy, or slow backhand chop rallies which require the utmost concentration to win the point. Serves which can win or lose the point, even if it is 10 shots later. A bad serve and you are on the rack, a good serve and you are in control. I have nearly always found opponents to be great sportsmen and gallant losers or winners. With occasional brief conversation in between points, and laughs and ooohs/arrrs at net and edge shots. Table tennis is a great game which will be around for amny years to come. Also the Woolwich Bank in sponsoring a junior league is providing youngster with the experience of competition is a less serious atmosphere of Graded tournaments, setting them off on the way to hopefully catching up with the Chinese. Senior leagues will be in nearly all towns throughout the land, I live in a town populated somewhere around 80k and there about 20 teams accross 3 leagues so competition is good. We also have inter-cups with the other local league which provides an atmosphere as you are representing yourslef and team, and although not officially you are representing the town so it has that added feeling of pride to increase determination to win. Even if you are not a serious player you should dig out that table (or buy one from around £150), or put the suction cup nets onto the dinner table, Or if the case may be get down to the local sports centre as Table Tennis is a game you really should experience.

- 09/05/01 I remember going on holiday with my mates as a teenager, one of the guys who was staying in the hotel was about seventy, he was also an ex British champion or something and he whupped us every night at table tennis. We were all exhausted and he was as fit as a flea! |
