Advantages: Need one to play tennis

Disadvantages: CAn be expensive, especially restringing

It seems that the average tennis player spends far more money on tennis racquets and equipment than necessary.

Before one buys an expensive racquet one should have mastered the basic strokes and be able to hold a rally hitting the ball at least 20 times. On the other hand a tennis pro has very catered needs so an expensive tennis racquet is required. For an amateur, even the cheapest racquet will do. Go to Lilywhites in Piccadilly Circus in London and one can buy a decent beginners racquet for approx £15.

For those who want to play a more competitive level of tennis I would recommend a slightly more expensive racquet in the region of £50. Still, even for this level of tennis player a £150 tennis racquet is unnecessary.

In reality the initial purchase of a tennis racquet is only the first stage since tennis racquets come out the factory with very poor stringing. I recommend having the racquet restrung immediately. To have a racquet restrung costs in the region of £15-£25, depending what kind of strings are used.

If I play tennis intensively at least three times a week, the strings tend to break after maybe 6 weeks. However this depends on each person's style of play. I like to put a lot of top spin on my shots so the strings break often however some my friends hit very flat shots and so the strings rarely break. Depending on your style of play the cost of maintaining a racquet will vary.
