Tennis, for me, is the best sport in the world. Unfortunately it is also very expensive! When you add up the cost of joining a club, coaching fees, racquets and clothing the it amounts to a substantial sum of money.
Like most sports to play seriously you will need the correct gear. In the case of tennis this includes a decent racquet and the correct clothing. Tennis shoes are not like ordinary trainers. If you try to play in trainers you will not only damage the tennis court surface but could well injure yourself. Tennis trainers have non-marking soles and good grip. They also need to give god ankle support.
Before you buy a pair of tennis shoes you need to consider the type of court surface you will be playing on. Some tennis shoes are only suitable for indoor courts and would not fare well on astro turf for example. I usually play on astro turf and find my shoes wear out fairly quickly due to the rough surface. You really do need to ensure you have good grip to prevent slipping over when running for a ball.
The next point is fairly obvious; try the shoes on before you buy! Different makes vary enormously. It is important to try shoes on wearing sports socks so you get the right fit. There are lots of makes and styles available, but I really like K -Swiss. They have leather uppers and suit my feet. Prices vary from about £50.
Once you have found the shoes you like on the high street you could always have a look on the Internet to see if you can find a better deal! However I have found that there is little difference in the prices.
A pair of tennis shoes tends to last me for about 6 months and I play regularly on astro turf. My shoes wear out around the toe area and of course the tread tends to wear down.
Overall I recommend tennis, it is a great game and has a god social side to it as well! If you are new to the game then ask other players for advice on where to buy shoes. To play well you will need good, comfortable footwear.
