Advantages: Lots to choose from
Disadvantages: Some are not such good quality.
When playing tennis you would think that all you have to have is a decent tennis racquet and a ball. Well you would almost be right thinking that but you also have to have a decent pair of trainers on your feet. Lots of different companies make trainers especially for tennis so you have quite a lot to choose from. Tennis trainers are a little bit different to your everyday fashion trainers because they have reinforced toes and better grip. Most tennis players now drag their feet behind them when they play their groundstrokes. It is not that they are taught to do it, it is just a natural thing to do to get more balance and to get into better position to hit the ball. If you played tennis with a pair of trainers that were cheap and didn't have a reinforced toe then you would make a whole in the end of them quite quickly. The toes are reinforced with rubber most of the time, as this is hard and durable, and it is very reassuring to know that when you are playing you are not destroying your trainers at the same time. Tennis is not just about hitting the ball. A big part of the game is movement and footwork. This is why tennis trainers need to have very good soles, allowing a player to move easily and quickly round a court. Not trusting your trainers is very bad. You need to know that when you move you are not going to slip over. Trainers can be made for different court types. You can get trainers that are made for indoor courts. These trainers are very rubbery and have a lot of grip and last for a long time. Trainers with soles that are harder are generaly for outdoor surfaces as they last longer and get better grip. Tennis trainers range a lot in price, from about £20 up to about £100. It is all to do with the make, design and the quality of the trainer. If you have a trainer made by Hi-Tec the quality would not be that good, but the price would be very low. If you wanted a top quality Nike pair then they would
be very comfortable, would last a long time, but would also cost you quite a bit. I used to play with a man that used to buy very cheap trainers. He would go through a pair a fortnight but it worked out cheaper for him that way. He tried to impress us with it but we knew that his trainers were killing his feet. The choice is really yours. It depends on how much money you have got and on how keen you are about tennis. If you play tennis at least three times a week then I would suggest getting a fairly expensive pair, but if you are only playing once a month then there is no point of getting an expensive pair. There are quite a few different makes about. Makes like Wilson and Head are always very reliable but the trainers aren't that flashy. They are plain and basic but do the job very well. For a very basic pair of Head trainers you would have to pay about £20 but for a pair, which will last you, a lot longer we are talking about £60. Companies like Nike and Adidas make very good tennis trainers. They have top designs and they are always very comfortable. Nike in particular makes a very comfortable shoe but you do have to pay a lot or them. You wont get a decent pair of Adidas or Nike trainers for less then £40. I recently just bought a pair of Adidas tennis trainers. My last pair of Nike ones were completely worn out and ended up with holes in the toes so I was in desperate need of a new pair. I ordered a few brochures from online companies and looked around a bit because I wanted something a bit different but something that would last. In the end I decided on a pair called Adidas Hypnotise. In the brochure they looked very 'snazzy' and were kind of stylish. They are bright blue and white and are very light. They cost me £70. Although this sounds a lot, these trainers will last me for about six months so I think that it was money well spent. After playing with them a few times I fi
nd them to be very lightweight and very comfortable, as they are well cushioned. They are really easy to move about in and they make running for wide shots and drop shots a lot easier. I would recommend these trainers to the aggressive player, as that is whom they are designed for. <br>When you are buying your tennis trainers there are a few things that you need to look out for. Make sure that the trainer fits very tight to your foot and that your foot does not move in the trainer. Movement in a trainer can cause ankle problems and a lot of pain. Make sure that the trainer is not to heavy, as it is important that it is light, so that movement is easy. You need to make sure that it won't rub. Playing tennis is hard enough without having to worry about blisters the size of tennis balls on your feet. Although it may look very fashionable not to tie your trainers properly, but in tennis it is very important that you do tie them well. This stops the foot moving about in the shoe and again stops ankle injuries. Check the shoe to make sure that it has reinforced toes, as there is nothing worse then paying a lot of money for something that you are going to destroy within a few weeks. Remember that a tennis trainer not a fashion item it is a crucial piece of equipment. Your pair of trainers does not have to be stylish and does not have to be fashionable. It is important to remember that as long as it does the job it is good enough. I hope that I have helped you and given you a rough guide about buying tennis trainers and about tennis trainers in general. If you have any questions please leave a comment and I will answer it as soon as possible.

- 18/06/02 Your opinion is a good starting point but I would like to comment a few things.
Most tennis magazines attribute "toe drag" to the service rather than ground strokes. This is something that I have found to be what is happening in most cases from my experience playing club a league tennis.
You also did not mention shock absorbtion. This is most important when playing on hard courts which can cause joint damage. I have personal experience of this a while back where an pair tennis shoes would make my ankles and knees feel stiff the next day.
It is also worth emphasising the importance of support in a tennis shoe. Tennis shoes are designed to support the foot / ankle from the shocks, stresses and strains encountered in tennis. This is very important because the fast changes in direction and rapid acceleration and deceleration can cause bad injuries. I have been unfortunate enough to witness someone break their ankle trying to change direction too quickly and it is not pretty!
Keep up the good work - the more people learn about the importance of proper equipment the more they will enjoy the sport. |
