Advantages: Keeps your drink cool, nice shape, spill resistant, dishwasher safe, refillable ice tube
Disadvantages: None!
Once upon a time we had a water machine at work which dispensed lovely cool water, but since moving offices we've lost our water machine and so I now have to take my own water (the tap water there is awful!). However, filling a bottle with water tends to mean it's warm by the time I've been at work for a short while. During the summer I resorted to freezing the bottled water just to keep me cool, but then I found it wouldn't melt as quick as I wanted to drink it. Argh! I needed a solution.......
I found that solution while shopping in Tesco... The Thermos Hydro Active Sports Bottle. This isn't just any sports bottle, it's one with a "Refillable Ice Tube"! The removable ice tube sits neatly in the centre of the bottle and is simply removed, then filled with water before being placed in the freezer. Once frozen, simply fit the ice tube back into the sports bottle and then fill to the required level with water (or another type of drink) and put the lid back on. (Please note that this sports bottle is for non-carbonated drinks only). My office at work is quite warm due to the amount of computers and equipment in it, but I still found that water in the sports bottle was still fairly cool a few hours later.
The Thermos Hydro Active Sports Bottle is made from BPA free materials. This means that the product does not contain Bisphenol A (BPA), which is thought to be a health concern, so you can be sure you are drinking from a safe container with this sports bottle. Also, using this sports bottle rather than a disposable water bottle means you aren't throwing away a bottle every day (as I've noticed a lot of water bottles these days tend to say not to refill).
I hate those sports bottles with a lift up lid where you have to "suck" the water out and it dribbles out, so I was glad to see that this sports bottle simply has a flip up lid. Upon opening the lid you can see that the oval opening is just the right width to drink from. However, I would like to note that you have to ensure you have push the lid down enough to seal the bottle so that it doesn't leak. I ensure mine is closed properly and I've yet to have a problem with leaks, however I have heard of some people having problems with the bottle leaking but I would think that they've simply not pushed down on the lid.
Despite the wide-ish opening to drink from, Thermos claim the bottle is spill-resistant... I've yet to test this theory as I don't tend to go throwing the bottle around with the lid open, but due to the shape of the bottle it does look like very little would come out should you accidentally knock over the bottle. The bottle has a contoured shape and is easy to hold. I wash my bottle in the sink with the rest of the washing up, but this sports bottle is dishwasher safe should you want to throw it in the dishwasher.
As far as I'm aware, the Thermos Hydro Active Sports Bottle comes in red, blue and charcoal grey. I have the charcoal grey one and it's see-through so you can see exactly how much liquid you have in the container.
I bought my Thermos Hydro Active Sports Bottle (450ml) from Tesco for £4. Larger sizes are also available, but this one is just the right size for fitting in my work bag.
Would I recommend this? Definitely! Even somebody at work commented on how useful it seemed, what with keeping the water cool, and they were thinking about buying one for their daughter to take to school. Useful all round!
Summary: Keeps my water cool :)

- 20/10/09 I should really get something like this - I seem to create an inordinate amount of plastic bottle waste with all my water drinking. |
