Advantages: Hard wearing, stylish, resoleable, reasonably wide fitting.

Disadvantages: Timberland brand somewhat chavvy these days.

What a blast from the past. I got my first pair of these in 1997 and a second pair about five years later, both pairs lasted a good four four or five years. I even got the second pair resoled as I'd worn out the bottoms from so much walking, but the uppers were fine.

Despite the fashion label origins of Timberland I found these boots to be so well constructed that they were able to withstand the rigours of fairly hardcore walking and scrambling in the Lake District for several years. I even did some climbing and bouldering in them, and at one point a scree run descent from the Langdale pikes. The only wear was the rubber lining around the lower part of the upper came away slightly on one boot, but this was easily rectified with superglue.

My feet are quite wide and despite the narrow look of the boots I found them to be extremely comfortable. Don't be put off by the lack of gore-tex liner as this will actually stop your feet overheating, being leather the boots will be largely waterproof anyway and very breathable. Treating the uppers with care and conditioning regularly will keep them this way.

In 1997 I paid about £70 pounds for them, so now they would actually be considerably cheaper. Had I not bought a pair of Brashers recently and I'd been aware Timberland had re-released these boots I would have bought them without hesitation, despite the somewhat chavvy image of Timberland now.

Summary: Twelve years on and they don't look dated.
