If like me, you think mountain biking is about 'touring around' and not 'roaring around' off-road; then you need to look for a frameset like the WTB Phoenix, which may well have been superceded by now (any knowledge?; please forward). I have to confess I am out of touch with the modern scene, I get out there and do it; don't read about, talk about, just do it.. I purchased my frame in 1994 - it was everything I wanted and nothing more.
