Advantages: Quality components, hardwearing.

Disadvantages: No disc breaks

I brought this bike about four years ago as I wanted a decent mountain bike to use for commuting, but also something I could thrash around at the weekends in the countryside. The Trek 4500 fulfills both of these with ease.

Although it's not the cheapest bike around (I was planning on spending about 200 quid) the extra money does give you a set of Rock Shox Judy front forks and Bontranger rims, handlebars etc. I also picked one in US Postal colours - black frame with red, white and blue swashes - nice!

Overall, the bike is great. In the four years I've had it, I've not had any serious faults, minimal wear and tear (I need to chang the back chainset as the chain strech has worn down the teeth on some of the smaller cogs) and I eventally changes the tyres after about three years! Not good when you're careering down Beacon Hill in the rain!

The only minus point would be the lack of disc breaks, which some similar priced models had when I was making my choice, but by and large, your money goes on better components and frame, which is generally more important.

All in all, a great bike and well worth the cash. I've thrown mine around (been over the handlebars twice) and riddden 30 miles a week plus and it's still coming back for more!

Summary: Does everything you would want from a mountain bike

Cycling is the future, especially in London with the cost of transport!
