Advantages: Modern gym with all mod cons
Disadvantages: High monthly fees
*This review is based on my experiences of the Virgin Active gym in Bickley - it seems odd that individual gyms would be added, as opposed to the gym as a chain.*
From my first trip to sign up at this gym I was impressed by the quality of the facilities and the businesslike manner of the staff. There's always someone around when you need them and I have no complaints at all on this front.
The gym itself features a huge range of cardiovascular equipment (treadmills, cross trainers, steppers and all the other favourites), several suites (including one for spin classes, which are too energetic for me!) In addition to this there are lots of resistance machines and a very generous area with free weights.
There's a good sized swimming pool avec jacuzzi, a seperate section of the gym for ladies and steam rooms for both sexes (well I assume the girls have one too). To top it all off, there is also a spa, small shop area and a café, all supported with ample parking for all the lazy sods who drive to the gym.
Changing facilities are spacious (private facilities for parents with kids, too) and regularly cleaned, with more than enough lockers and good powerful showers.
In short, like any good quality gym there's essentially no reason to leave the building once you're in there. I'm greatly enjoying shedding the Christmas pounds there and a visit through its bright doors is about as much fun as any trip to the gym can be.
Unfortunately for me, good services come at a price. My monthly membership comes in at £53.95 and is fairly steep. If you'd like to give it a go why not join up with a friend/partner - there's normally better deals to be had.
Summary: Great gym with everything you'd need, although you pay for the privilege
