Advantages: Facilities are excellent
Disadvantages: Price and Location
I popped in to the Virgin Active Gym near Kirkstall the other day after receiving a weeks free entry from my University after joining the rugby team.
I turned up after a long night out and really needed a relaxation fix, but i spent some time in the gym as well and was extremely impressed.
Location
----------
The location of the Virgin Active gym in Leeds is a bit of a disappointment. It is located in the suburb of Kirkstall which is a good 5 miles out of the city centre. This obviously makes it extremely difficult to get too and therefore is not the best aspect of the gym. I think to use it regularly you would definately need a car.
2/5.
Gym Facilities
-----------------
The gym facilities were, as you would expect, absolutely first class and i was very impressed. On your walk into the changing rooms you go past the wide range of both cardio and weights products that the gym has to offer. Cardio wise there is an abundance of x-trainers, runners, cycles and step machines, whereas for weights there are ample machines which work the entire body and also free weights for those more dedicated weight lifters.
Theres also a great area designated to floor excersise right in the middle of the gym.
5/5
Pool and Spa
-----------------
Due to my state, this was definately my favourite aspect of my visit. I went for a good swim in the pool where different lanes are allocated for different speeds depending on how hard you want to push yourself. Theres also a great spa facility in a side room which contains a sanarium, sauna and steam room, as well as a great hydro pool and ice bath shower. Its a great place to come to relax and while away a few hours.
5/5.
Price
-----
Unfortunately, the price is the reason that i will not be visiting again in a hurry. To be a member, it is 45 pounds a month for a student, which is absolutely huge when compared to other gyms in the area. Although the facilities are absolutely superb, this really does let it down for those of us who are working on a strict budget.
Summary
-----------
A great gym, but too pricey for me.
Summary: Brilliant if you have the money

- 02/10/09 I used to be a member a few years back before the kids took all my spare cash. I tried it again a couple of weeks ago under a free day pass and although I agree the Spa is one of the best I have ever experienced, I think some of the equipment is a bit run down. Several of the machines were broken and there were tiles missing in the steam room. Good review though. |
