York Leather Belt
by Danscomp Weight lifting belts provide crucial lumbar support for mass building exercises. These are your typical bread and butter movements. Squats, deadlifts and the overhead press. York is the prime entry level player. Cheap, but not particularly nasty. And for many cash strapped weight enthusiasts, they represent a manufacturer that they will ... buy from again and again. It is extremely important that a weight belt is worn properly. The wide section across the back needs to be perfectly positioned to provide the protection you will need. The best gauge for this is for the buckle to be over your belly button and tight enough to feel reasonably restrictive. If the belt is pressing into your ribcage, it is too high. You should be unable to get as much as a little finger in anywhere. This belt is nowhere near as easy to position as some that I have tried, but obey these simple rules and you should be fine. The leather in this belt and metal hardware are both fit for purpose. I've had this belt a few years now, and apart from some discolouration and wrinkling of the leather, it is as serviceable now as it has ever been. There are a number of holes that can be selected, but you have to be careful - and honest - when choosing the size. There may be seven double-set positions available, but if none of them is just right for you, you may well end up paying for it. Please note that this belt does not make you immune to injuries, particularly if you squat without a partner, as I have done in the past. It can give you a false sense of security, and ending up with a tear in your spinal erector muscles and spending a week on your back is no fun. I speak from personal experience. Bruce Lee once tried lifting without following his usual precautions and it almost spelt the end of his career. (For those of you that have seen the unintentionally howlingly funny "Dragon", it wasn't due to a secret Chinese underground fighting bout!) If you don't train with a partner, using a smith rack for these exercises is a very prudent thing to do. As you can push things a little further, and not be in a position when you are unable to complete an exercise and have no way of dumping the bar. You will still need to ensure that you use correct form when doing the exercise, belt or no belt. In summary, this is reasonable quality for a reasonable price. If you lift seriously, you should spend more in order to get something that much better. Read the complete review |

York 1 inch Barbell Pad
by pmcds If you're into weights and have thought about moving on from the standard dumbbells then using a barbell is a good way of developing your core strength and increasing the power you have. However, too many people launch straight into using the barbell without any padding and give up after a few minutes because their grip isn't ... comfortable. York is a leading fitness equipment manufacturer, and I've rarely had an issue with any of their weights equipment. My work gym has this padding for their barbells, and the way they help protect and support is very reassuring. The padding itself is quite tight outside and in, slotting securely over the bar itself and tightened with durable velcro. The padding itself doesn't squidge very much, instead giving good grip and allowing you to protect your hands a lot more than the bare would let you. There's a slight concern that holding the bar and jerking it up would be trickier and the padding would roll instead of gripping, but as long as you tighten it properly then you're going to get good grip and not have a problem at all. The padding fits 1 inch thick barbells, and not the 2 inch ones. If you were to wrap it round a 2 inch bar then it wouldn't reach all the way round as it's designed to be tight to to the bar and this will make using it nigh on impossible; it'll certainly negate its use by not being as secure as it should be. But when it's around the 1 inch bar it seems to fit just right. The barbells at the gym get used a lot, and so the padding gets washed. I've never seen this happen, to be honest, but it is noticeable after it has been done and it still manages to retain its shape and flexibility. You'd expect cheap products to deteriorate noticeable after time, but ultimately this one doesn't at all. I find that it needs a bit of plying in order to feel comfortable in your hands when you first use it, but then this would be the same for most products, clothes included, when you first use them after cleaning. It takes only a few small moments to get used to it again, and with this fitting snug round a barbell there's no real issue with it, to be honest. The grip is aided by a sort of PVC sleeve, and so it doesn't really feel as if you are gripping merely a foam padding but something that is part of the barbell itself, and I think this is the key - after a while you forget that what you're gripping actually comes apart from the bar itself and it seems as if it's part of the original piece of equipment. This mentally helps you when you're trying to lift the weights, as well as the padding helping to ease the discomfort you may feel when resting the bar on various parts of your body depending on what exercises you're doing with the bar itself. The bar prices quite well at around the £10 mark, although I've seen it for less and for more. It's a quality product that is a good investment as you shouldn't need to replace it too often. I've certainly seen the same pad for a long time with plenty of usage and it's holding fast. Cheaper products are likely to deteriorate a lot quicker and not be good value for your money, but this one certainly is. Recommended. Read the complete review |

York 1 inch Barbell Pad
by Revo9 The York fitness 1 inch barbell pad, is a protective pad which can fit standard 1 inch barbells. Usage of the pad is designed to soften the weight of a heavy barbell resting on your neck/trapezius muscles from heavy squats. I bought the product from fitness-superstore.co.uk for a price tag of £8.50 Appearance The product ... was red, with the words "York fitness" in white capital font in the centre of the velcro fastener. The red velcro fastener is made from PVC and is apparently washable. It has a velcro closure system at the end which locks quite securely. The red cover looks classy and attractive rather than just a plain foam product you can buy cheaply off of eBay. The actual pad of the product is made from black foam, has a 1 inch diameter and is made so that the red velcro cover fits over the top of it. The product is available in a slightly different form, with a different style logo and a white coloured foam pad depending on where you buy the product from. Durability I've had the product for a few years now and It has lasted very well. I was initially scared the foam would get damaged and chunks of foam may fall out. This has not been the case and with sensible care of the foam and Velcro closure from the PVC outer sleeve, I can see this product lasting many years. The red PVC sleeve is tough, strong and made from good quality materials, the logo and paintwork has held well on it and has not flaked away. The Velcro has not frayed and worn away and is still working well and securely. For just £8.50 you get great durability, but from commercial usage in a gym, I could see the product having lower durability simply from heavy usage. For a personal gym, this product is well made and will last years. Usability/Protection The product is great for dampening the force exerted from a heavy barbell on your traps, neck and deltoids. You certainly feel less pain, and it offers much better comfort than just a solid steel bar. The PVC is a tough material and sticks well to me, it does not slide and fall off under heavy weights and overall has made Squatting a more comfortable experience for me. The padded black foam is quite thick and not too thin that you can feel the bar sharply down on you. The diameter of the foam is only one inch, so it will only be compatible with standard barbells. If you have an Olympic barbell then the diameter will be two inches, meaning the product will not fit upon it, so don't bother buying it if you have Olympic sized equipment. I've successfully used the product for barbell heel raises, good mornings and barbell squats brilliantly and I've also used it to train my grip. The product adds extra diameter to the standard barbell which when you just hold the barbell with the York pad attached statically for as long as you can, I developed better grip strength. Pricing The product was very well priced for just £8.50 on fitness-superstore.co.uk, it can also be bought on Amazon and other sports stores as well easily for a similar price. For the good quality, good sleeve artwork and design and good comfort and protection the product offers, £8.50 is very good value for money. I've saw barbell pads just made from low quality foam on eBay for £5 without any PVC sleeve, but the quality of these products was much lower than the York barbell pad. So overall the product by York offers fantastic value for money. Drawbacks I've not encountered any real problems with the York barbell pad, except maybe York could offer a choice of different colours for the PVC sleeve or maybe give you a choice of two foam pads, one for 1 inch barbells and the other for Olympic sized 2 inch barbells so it was applicable to everyone. Maybe if they done all this for £10 or £11 then it would be still good value for money but would offer increased versatility and maybe sell better in the UK. Overall To conclude, this product looks great with the PVC sleeve, is made from quality componenet, is very comfortable and makes squatting more pleasant, can be used for other barbell exercises and can be used to train grip strength on static holds and retails for a fantastic price of just £8.50 in the UK. The product is durable and will last years from personal usage, but commercial usage may result in the product wearing away or breaking from overuse. I use the York barbell pad whenever I perform the said exercises in my workout and it was a brilliant investment, I highly recommend the product if you have a standard 1 inch diameter barbell! © Revo9 (2011) *Note, I am both a member of Ciao and Dooyoo.co.uk under the same username of Revo9* Read the complete review |
