Newest Review: ... you have to do is register and print off your barcode and take this with you. Parkrun is a 5k (3.1mile) run, when you finish you are awarded a tag and they scan your barcode. Later that day you receive an e-mail with your official time and placing and you also receive points. My local event regularly attracts over 200 people each week from elite runners to running novices and starts at 9a.m. Some people also bring along their dogs to take part. Before Christmas I signed up to do the Manchester 10k Bupa run. Several years ago I had made a pact with my friend that before I turn 30 I would like to run a marathon. I am not even sure why as up to that point I have never been particularly interested in running, nor could I see the appeal. I figured doing this run would be a good starting point and I told myself that straight after Christmas I would start my training. March came around and in true me style I had not even invested in a pair of running shoes or been for a single run. I live in a area where it seems everyone runs and they do it well. parkrun is a relatively new phenomenon that is really taking off in this country. The idea is that every week there is a 5km (3.1 miles) timed run that anybody can turn up and do for free. It's a great way to get fit, improve your times and meet new people. parkrun was started by Paul Sinton-Hewitt in 2004. It initially consisted of a small group of people running in Bushy Park in London. It then expanded to several venues and then started to pop up all over the country.
