Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred (DVD)
Advantages: Gets me fit and pushes my body to the max
Disadvantages: Can be tiring, and may be too difficult for beginners
I first thought about buying a fitness DVD just after Christmas, when I wanted to kick start my body in order to find a new job, and look great. Now, with Christmas looming again, I know I can rely on this trusty DVD to save my flabby self in the new year once again, I was that pleased with the results from last time! Here's my review from when I first used the fitness DVD:
Why this one?
As a fitness DVD virgin, I admittedly purchased Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD on price - it was much cheaper than other celebrity fitness DVDs which are available. Plus, the word "shred" instilled promises of weight dropping off me within the 30 days - a maximum of 20 pounds is claimed to be reachable, alongside a well balanced diet!
What's it about?
Presented by fitness star of America's "The Biggest Loser" television series, Jillian Michaels, the DVD is her own specially formulated fitness regime, working on a 3-2-1 system: that's 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of ab work. With a warm up, followed by three 3-2-1 regimes, and a cool down tagged on to the end, the workout totals at 20 minutes per time - perfect for fitting in in the morning, or last thing before bed. There are three levels available on the DVD, and the idea is that you begin with level 1, and work your way up to level 3 as and when you feel ready.
When you first press play on the DVD, you are greeted by Jillian Michaels, who introduces herself, and explains how the DVD will work. This is great the first time you use the DVD, but 30 days later, I'm finding it a bit tedious, and you can't skip to the next scene easily, you either have to fast forward through it, or wait around for it to go to the main menu. The main menu gives you options including "Recommendations", which takes you to a page telling you about other things you can do to maximise your weight loss, and how best to use the DVD, and "Credits", as well as the link to the main workouts. Clicking on this takes you to another page, where you choose your level, and then off you go. In my opinion it's a bit of a long process to reach the workout, but maybe that's just me being impatient...
The actual workouts are tough, non-stop and really work up a sweat. All you need is a set of hand weights, and they suggest a mat if you're working on a hard floor. Jillian talks you through the exercises herself, using two demonstrators, introduced as Natalie and Anita, who work at intermediate and beginner levels, incorporating all users. Exercises include press ups, crunches, and jumping jacks amongst others, and by the time I have done the warm up, I can feel the effects already. Even the background music isn't too bad, although I was working that hard that I barely noticed it to be honest!
The first time I did the DVD, I started with level 1, and could hardly walk the next day. But, a week later, as promised, I found myself with a new lease of stamina, and I progressed on to level 2. Now, I can manage level 3 quite easily, but still feeling the effects, and 30 days after beginning the programme, I have dropped a stone in weight. I wasn't overweight to begin with, and so I expect that anyone who is would drop much more than me. But I am certainly happy with the results I have gained, and my body is much more toned and stronger.
I would definately recommend this fitness DVD to anybody who is looking for a bit of a challenge whilst losing weight and toning up. It's not for the faint hearted in my opinion, but it definately delivers results if you persevere. Jillian is a tough trainer, and even though I knew that at any moment I could turn the DVD off, I felt a little bit scared that if I did, Jillian would somehow find out and shout at me!
I look and feel fantastic, and will be maintaining my daily use of the DVD to keep up with my new body, and I suggest that anybody wanting to look fantastic for an upcoming event should purchase this DVD as well.
Great price, and great results - it's just what I wanted!
