Aimed towards people who already have some experience of Pilates, "Stott Pilates: Core Challenge" is a great workout that specifically helps you get those stomach and back muscles toned up. This DVD was my first experience of Pilates. Although it does say that this is not for complete beginners, I'm already quite fit and a fast learner who already does yoga among other things, so I just dived in.
With a workout duration of 40 minutes, it's a good workout that goes through many different exercises and leaves you feeling strong, energetic and healthy. When starting out, it can be a little too fast at times so I tended to pause it and finish the harder steps before letting them continue onto the next one. You only require an exercise mat and there is no other equipment needed at all, which is a great plus as I like to exercise with as little fuss as possible.
One tip when watching this, I much preferred concentrating on the guy as opposed to the woman in the foreground as she was like a ballerina (or most probably IS a ballerina) doing everything perfectly and with style. I prefer to watch someone who isn't doing everything with so much precision so that I know I'm doing the moves OK. The guy even uses a cushion for some of the moves so it just made me feel less inferior to watch him over the graceful ballerina lady.
The results of the workout are great. I'm toned and my stomach and back are feeling strong so I'm very pleased to have purchased this DVD. Pilates is such a great way to keep strong and feel healthy.
A minor gripe was that the training instructor could have given a bit more encouragement. She doesn't take part in the exercises and talks to the two 'performers' and the viewer through the moves. I felt that the encouragement was lacking slightly compared to other fitness DVDs I have, but I think she's a bit from the 'old school'. She is extremely methodical though, efficient and clearly spoken, so still a fitness instructor of high quality. It's just that sometimes concentration during these exercises can be hard for me, so I really like some encouragement from the instructor in line with what I'm used to with other fitness training instructors. Also she's sometimes a little quick through the transition to the next move, but as I say, there is the pause button to solve that. It just means you've got to get used to the routine and then you'll be fine.
This "Stott Pilates: Core Challenge" DVD is currently available on Amazon for £6.24. I haven't had much experience with Pilates DVDs specifically yet, so I'm not sure how this compares, but it's a great start.
