Urban Workout (DVD)
Advantages: Fun, high energy
Disadvantages: Some of the moves are hard
One of my flatmates and I decided we wanted to have a bit of fun while working out and something I have always wanted to do is learn to dance. While looking on Amazon for dance workout DVDs, we came across Urban Workout and as it was only £2.49 I figured it was at least worth a try. Also, the product description enticed me a little bit 'A fresh new way to get fit! Urban Workout is a fitness routine created from a simple concept. If you love dancing and music - either on the dance floor or at home, then this is the workout for you!'.
The DVD is split up into different sections which I will explain below:
Warm Up - This is some basic dance moves along with stretching just to get you ready for the workout ahead of you. I thought that this was a really nice way to start the work out as it gets you used to how the instructors work and how things are going to be explained. You don't really work up any type of sweat here but it was a nice way to start.
Slo & Lo - Next is the Slo & Lo section (yes, spelt like that!) which begins to raise the tempo up from the warm up. The songs used in this section are infact quite slow but with a nice beat that you can dance to. Although this says it is a slow section, I still managed to work up a bit of a sweat as all of the moves are repeated quite a few times and there isn't any spaces where you can catch much of a breath. Some of the steps taught in this section are quite difficult if you have bad coordination like I do so getting everything right the first time was impossible for me. It seems as though I have a problem moving my arms and legs in different directions at the same time!
Mid-Section - Then on to the mid-section which again, increases the tempo of the songs and the workout. As I said, I was having some problems in the previous section and that didn't get any better here. The amount of time you are given to learn each move is lessened and the instructor quickly moves on to another just as you think you are getting the first one. After each new move learned, the routine is taken back to the beginning so that you can put everything together. Because of this, the routine is great for keeping you moving and your heart rate rising the whole time. Again, some of the moves are pretty tricky and I did find myself staring at the screen a few times thinking 'what the hell?!' but I did my best and gave everything a go.
Hard & Heavy - At this point, I had a good sweat going on and could definitely feel my heart going. The Hard & Heavy section is exactly what it says it is. The instructor wastes no time in getting down to the new routine. In this section, there is a lot of moving in different directions, playing some fake basketball, acting like you have some swagger and celebratory hands waving in the air. As silly as that sounds, put together with great music and the rest of the routine, it was extremely fun! This part of the work out is hard but I'm glad. Adding it to the rest of the DVD, it was a nice way to finish off before the cool down.
Cool Down - This part is much like the warm up but with less dance moves. The cool down is all about stretching and making sure you look after your body after a good workout. I didn't actually bother with this part though as I was so hot all I wanted to do was sit down... or collapse and die!
The first time I did this workout, I was on my own. I wanted to see what it was like without looking like a complete idiot and to judge how hard it was going to be. Since then, my flatmate and I have had so much fun trying to do this together and realising that we both look like complete idiots and are never going to be able to dance to hip-hop any time soon. Not that we really care. A good thing about this DVD workout is that if you are into urban music, you should be able to sing along to most of the soundtrack like I did. With songs like Mya, Case Of The Ex and Montell Jordan, Get It On Tonight it has a fantastic soundtrack that I loved working out to.
Overall, this DVD workout is fun and funky but also gives you a great workout at the same time. I think that this is one I will happily do repeatedly and hope to actually get better at the real dance moves and not just the workout part!
Summary: I love this workout
