Advantages: Wonderful scenery, fantastic course

Disadvantages: Pricey

Upon entering the Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort, you feel as though you have passed through the gates of time. The 18th century Manor house, an architectural masterpiece of towers, turrts and stonework, serves as a cornerstone of the 840-acre estate that has been lovingly transformed into Ireland's premier luxury vacation destination and golf resort. The Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course is what I will describe below.

I played it for the first time during the Summer and what a gem it is. It is in perfect condition, with tee-boxes as level and as tight as the greens. There are classic holes with my favourite being the 18th. A wonderful par-5 that will tease your 2nd shot towards the green over a river. Make it and you have a great scoring chance. Do not make and you could end up swimming.

Below is a brief hole-by-hole description of the course.

Hole 1 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A good drive down the left of the fairway is required to avoid the line of trees on the right. A deep stream runs along the front of the undulating green, which makes for tough pin positions and a challenging second shot. A medium
Hole 2 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is best to leave your driver in the bag for this one as the doglog to the left requires an accurate tee shot down the right. A tall tree guards the green on the right, while a large bunker and stream lies in wait for an errant second shot.

Hole 3 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A slight draw off the tee is required for one of the tightest tee shots on the course. The second shot is equally as demanding for the two-tier green is very narrow, and is guarded by a large bunker and surrounded by woodland.
Hole 4 - Par 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The river comes in to play at the back of the green on this short par 3. To the front, large bunkers guard the green on both sides.

Hole 5 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This dogleg to the right is one
of the toughest holes on the course. To reach the green in two, players must avoid the fairway bunker on the right and the high rough lining both sides of the fairway. The elevated green perched on a hill above the players calls for a blind second shot.
Hole 6 - Par 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This long par 3 is surrounded by water and is heavily bunkered on the right. The long narrow green with a swail in the middle makes for a difficult club selection.

Hole 7 - Par 5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a true classic. A large lake lies in wait along the entire right hand side of this hole to catch even the slightest wayward shot. The green, which is heavily bunkered and juts out into the lake, entices the bravest players only. Lay up to be safe.
Hole 8 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A large bunker on the right side guards against players cutting the corner on the short par 4 dogleg to the left. The elevated green with its swails and hollows makes for considered shot making.

Hole 9 - Par 5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The longest hole on the course (516 yards) requires a long accurate drive over a large fairway bunker and avoiding the heavy rough on both sides. The green has a narrow entrance for those wishing to reach the green in two. There are subtle slopes on the green which makes for interesting shot making.
Hole 10 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hitting the fairway is a must as the rough is high on both sides. The green is elevated and very shallow, and is guarded by three large bunkers.

Hole 11 - Par 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This hole is much more difficult than is first appears. A medium iron is all that is needed to clear the river, but trees and water lie in wait on the left and right of the green respectively.
Hole 12 - Par 5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A sharp dogleg to the right requiring a good drive down the centre of the fairway to avoid the dense forest on the left and out of bounds on the r
ight. Big hitters can reach the green in two but mjst carry the ball all the way as two bunkers make a very narrow entrance to this long green.

Hole 13 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This tough par 4 threads its way through mature forest. The ideal tee shot is down the right side. Your second shot must be accurate as trouble is surrounds the green.
Hole 14 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another accurate drive is required to avoid being stymied by the mature trees on either side. A lake awaits a wayward shot to the right, while the green's slopes make for crucial club selection.

Hole 15 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another hole where it is best to leave the driver in the bag. The river runs along the entire right side, while trees on the left await to stymie the cautious. The green is well guarded by bunkers.
Hole 16 - Par 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is no room for error off this tee as a lake stretches all the way from tee to green. The green is very wide and shallow, and bunkers lie at the back of the green to catch those playing an extra club for safety.

Hole 17 - Par 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This calls for a good drive down the centre of the fairway avoiding the well placed bunker on the right. The second shot needs to be near perfect as the green is surrounded by trouble.
Hole 18 - Par 5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This has to be one of the greatest finishing holes ever. The river again comes in to play along the entire left side of the fairway. The green lies on the far side of the river. Only the brave players will attempt the green in two. You are better off laying up before having to negotiate the river.

The green fees are pricey enough. It will cost you IR£60 for 18 holes. Although if you have a group the price per head will go down to IR£40, depending on numbers. It is worth it though to play such a great course.

They have a strict dress code, so dress nice

I hope he plays well. Courses around here are wet right now, so hopefully by the time your husband gets here they will have dried out a bit. He will love the course all the same.

My man is a golfer, so I am printing this for future reference. Very useful indeed.
