Advantages: Can't think of any due to the shock of the price
Disadvantages: How much!
I like to take my children swimming and if I lived nearer to a swimming pool I would probably take them more often. I might even try some swimming on my own in a bid to shift some baby weight or maybe even water aerobics.
My nearest council run swimming pool is about 15 miles away and can get very over crowded. I live quite close to a David Lloyd Leisure Centre and thought it would be very convenient to use their pool.
I went onto their website and sent an email enquiring about membership. A few days later a member of their sales team rang me at tea time while I was trying in vain to get three rowdy children to eat. He asked me what I wanted to know so I shouted over the din that I was wondering if I could use the pool without membership or if I could just get a membership for swimming alone. He apologised that no this type of access wasn't allowed and that I would need to become a member. I asked how much it would be for a very basic membership that would allow me access to the pool. I could barely hear a word as the food had stopped coming so my children were attempting to gain my attention by shouting MUMMY! at two second intervals! Somehow I managed to end up with an appointment to go and view the leisure centre on a Saturday morning!
A little later after I had finished feeding the children and got them settled with some toys I rang David Lloyd back to explain that I didn't want to visit I just wanted to know how much it would cost. Unfortunately the original guy I spoke to wasn't there but I was told he would be around the following morning if I wanted to pop in then.
As far as I was concerned that was the end of it. I didn't want to visit the gym I just wanted a quote.
Sunday dinner time I got another call asking when I would like to go and visit the leisure centre. I apologised and said that I didn't actually want to see anything I just wanted to know how much it would cost. The guy on the phone was very helpful and said that if the membership was a basic off-peak (off-peak meaning between 6am and 4pm weekdays and 2pm and 9pm weekends) membership just for myself it would be £57.50 a month! I then asked how much it would cost if I had a family membership and he said off-peak would be £112.50 or anytime anyday would be £117.50 a month! A MONTH! I want to go swimming once a week not move in! If I had that much expendable income every month I'd build myself a bloody pool!
I didn't ask about terms and conditions because somehow I think paying £5 at the council run baths is about my limit!
Summary: How can anyone afford to go these leisure centres?
