Advantages: Fun, Different
Disadvantages: Costly
I recently was invited to a "Paintball Party" at the Delta Force Cardiff, which isn't really too near central Cardiff, it's a fair way out and near Llantrisant, but this review will record my experience and hopefully give you an insight into Delta Force. I have never been paintballing before and am therefore unable to compare Delta Force to any other paintballing operation.
After parking the car (which took a little bit of imagination as the relatively small car park was totally full) we all met up as a group before heading in to the actual centre. There is no bricks and mortar building, simply wooden huts. The first building you reach has a few marshalls to welcome you, check that you're on the reservations list and get you to sign a disclaimer to say that you will not sue if you slip and fall into a coma. Once everyone has signed their sole away, you walk through a corridoor of wheely bins, each with a different piece of equipment. You pick up a helmet/boiler suit/ optional body armour/ paintball hopper and you move into the main "safe zone" composed of a large square area with wooden benches. The safe zone is your main base area for the day, and includes a podium where the safety speech is given, a shop for buying piantballs and snacks (the paintballs are expensive, and this is where they may a lot of their money apparently) and also a locker shed with lockers that cost £5, and £3.50 is returned upon returning the locker key.
The safety speech is then given. I have never heard it before but my friends assure me it is exactly the same every time, with exactly the same jokes. It is quite entertaining and also very important. A paintball can afterall blind a person if it hits them in the face. I forgot to mention that there are various "colour" groups, I was in the blue team, and different colours compete against each other.
Throughout the day, you are escorted by the Marshalls to the various paintball courses after collecting a gun. The guns are heavy and made out of metal, they are powered by cannisters of CO2 gas. The courses vary, from a castle to a D-day landing type theme and some provide more cover than others. Often the aim of the game is to transport a flag behind enemy lines, or to raise the flag on a castle which is protected by the opposition team.
Delta Force serve pizzas which must be ordered early on in the day. They are either pepperoni or just your average cheese and tomato - the pizzas are nothing special and clearly very cheaply bought.
It's a good day out though I wouldn't be in any rush to go and do it again, it's very expensive if you want to keep enough paintballs to really allow you to have any fun, and boxes of paintballs cost about £120.
If you decide to go, be warned that paintballs hurt! You will suffer bruises that sting like a...
Summary: Try it once, I wouldn't recommend it as a serious past time however.
