Their are guys with big guns at these checkpoints to make sure that you pay the toll. You will also come across military checkpoints, at which Mexican troops check your car for narcotics, guns,(Never bring guns in Mexico) and things of that nature. I have been to Mexico many times and I found that Driving is not the best way of getting around in Mexico. Let me show you the different methods of traveling in Mexico, and how they compare. Driving: If at all possible I would recommend finding other means of getting around in Mexico besides driving. It seems like most of the people who run in to trouble in Mexico, are those who drive in Mexico. If you drive in Mexico you can't relax and look at the scenery, and you will get tired before you can enjoy your trip.
