Advantages: Good snow records in most france

Disadvantages: Lack of English speaking instructors making learning very diffucult

Having skied in many resorts in France accompanied by my wife and children we have found that the French Ski School - ESF is useless. I am sure that the instructors teach French children very well but there lack of English results in the poor teaching of British children. My son complained that the instructor often had trouble explaining technique to the group and they found it very diffucult to understand what they were supposed to be doing. The French only employ French instructors and the quality of the teaching for English speaking people has suffered as a result. The schools in Andorra and Austria are much better because the employ instructors who have a good grasp of the English language and are able to teach competently using it. I am sure not all the French instructors speak inadequate English but from my experince it would seem that this is true of the majority. I would recommend that beginners began in Andorra or Austria where theyw ill find the teaching of a much higher standard for the British. Hope I haven't put you off, France is a wonderful place to ski once you have learnt the basics and skiing is a wonderful sport, go for it!

The kids and I stay with friends in Chamonix every February and have shared the same problems with ESF. Although they are all fab skiers now and it is me who wimps off to the blue runs, I had awful trouble in finding a competent instructor for them to strat with. That was 6 years ago and eventually we found an Austrian instructor who was living in the resort and giving private lessons. He was absolutely wonderful with them and took all four out at once which left me to relax with my friends. Try finding out if there are any private instructors in a resort before you visit. After only a day or two you will come on leaps and bounds. Having a private instructor is ideal if you are new to the sport and are on a weekend holiday! Another tip - if you fancy trying ski-ing but have never done it before just go for a weekend to start with. That way if you turn your nose up you have not wasted so much money. Although I can't see how anyone could turn their nose up at ski-ing! ;-D Great review Iain

Fair point. Give it a try if you wish, but for most people that's not too uch of an option. How many five year years olds do you know that speak fluent french, and by the way this is regional Alps dialect. For most people this isn't really an option, so your advice is fairly discriminating. It is all very well asking how much a for a croissant but discussing the finer points of weight transferral is a different thing altogether!

What about learning both French and skiing?
Would be great for the kids especially if France is one of your favorite destinations!
Best way to enjoy a foreing country is to know its culture, its language!
