Advantages: Rewards good shots

Disadvantages: Slow rounds

Pype Hayes in Birmingham was voted the best municipal course in Britain a few years ago by the readers of Fore! magazine. It is not long and it can be desperately slow to play but that might not be over the top praise.

It is the course I dream of playing on the day when I hit my best form because, to be frank, it could be murdered. But I suspect that feeling comes from the fact that the course seems to reward good shots - the greens are excellent for a municipal, the fairways in good condition and the design a distinct cut above the local council usual.

In that sense, don't let the par-5 first put you off - it is a straight long slog with no distinction but very shortly you will find yourself hitting shots to greens and fairways protected by mature trees and plenty of bunkers with high quality sand.

The toughest section of the course is 10 to 13 which involves a par-3 with a deceptively difficult tee shot, two long par-4s which test accuracy and a tricky par-5 which tempts you to bite off more of the dogleg than is sensible.

Once on the 14th tee though, put your foot down and if you are hitting good mid-irons you'll find yourself well rewarded.
