Haste Hill Golf Club in Northwood (01923 825224) is a decent test for the 20-something handicapper. Missing the first green, watched by the clubhouse, can dispirit you as you tackle the tough first nine. Here the course is very hilly, with ditches, tress and bunkers, and you can feel relieved to reach the tenth, where things become much easier. Suddenly the holes are shorter and flatter and you remember what a great game golf is. The clubhouse is friendy enough, the fairways a little overgrown, but the greens excellent. It can take a while to get round, especially if you get stuck behind a hacking four-ball, but it's definitely worth a visit. ... Read the complete review

Haste Hill GC, Northwood, is a more than reasonable course ideal for high-handicappers. Once past the excellent but daunting par-3 1st, the course settles down into reachable par-4s and the odd little 3. Although a bit scruffy in places, Haste Hill is generally well-kept, with well-guarded greens and generous fairways. It offers superb views and at £18 is a good weekend course. Refreshments are available from the friendly clubhouse, but parking can be a problem on busy days.
