Advantages: A pleasure to play
Disadvantages: Unforgiving
Immaculate course, perfect setting in the Kent countryside, but not one designed for the moderate-to-poor golfer. You start with five par 4s in a row, and these give you an idea how testing the course is. The fairways start generous and degenerate into very mean, a perfect tee shot must often be followed by a very precise approach - as the greens are lightening fast. You can be inspired by the standard of golfers around you - but the clientele get impatient - frequently our foursome had balls pinging to within feet of us by over-eager country-folk standing on the tee. The 12th hole is particularly special, standing as it does next to a conveniently placed sandwich hut. Grab a cheese/pickle and a donut, then take a trusty 8 iron and try and land on a tiny green across the watery valley. Bend the ball right as I did and you'll end up in a forestry grave. This course will bring out the best and worst in your game, but try and savour the quality of the course condition - bunkers, fairways, greens and clubhouse are immaculate. But at £55 a round for 18-holes as a guest, you'd be advised to make sure somebody else is paying.
