Advantages: Cheap

Disadvantages: can be cold and 80's ish

Recently it has been my mission to lose a bit of weight and I have joined the local gym. I'm also a teacher which means it can be a little tricky to find the time to go to said gym! My local place s Medina Leisure Centre which is situated on Fairlee Road as you come into or out of Newport. This makes it easy to visit if you are on your way home from work.

Primarily a high school, Medina leisure centre also boasts a swimming pool, badminton and squash courts as well as a large theatre which also doubles as a monthly cinema.

The pool is your usual 25m jobby. Its quite clean, but can be quite cold. If you pick the wrong time as well you could be inundated with hoardes of children or old bids, so its worth checking the schedule before visiting. The changing rooms are relatively clean with £1 lockers in operation. I've laways hated the loos here and are in desperate need of a refurb. There is also a small slide that used to be the main thing to do on birthday parties back in the 80's, but is now quite sad and dilapidated.

I understand there is also a sauna and steam room at the centre, but I've never tried either out. If you have young children there is also a small pool that is used for toddlers. If memory serves me right the temperature is about that of molten lava - so be warned!

The reception boasts 4 machines serving all the fatty food you could want after an hour in the gym for reasonable prices.

The gym is relatively small, but is never crowded. There are your usual running machines, cycles and cross trainers. There are also rowing machine and other such gym equipment. There is also a climbing wall.

The gym is always clean and inviting, with very few muscle heads that use it. They usually show the Hits or 4 Music, which can be irritating, unless you like James Blunt when you are running. I am a member of the one card scheme which lets you have access to the pool and the gym 7 days a week for around thirty pounds a month, if you have a council pass - then it is around twenty three pounds.

Medina Leisure Centre is getting a little old now and could do with a revamp, but it serves a purpose and most Islanders would be lost without it as it is only one of three pools left on the whole IOW.

Summary: A decent place.

DISAPPOINTED! I thought i was going to read about the much loved Brittas Empire, instead, i was subjected to a good review of a leisure centre. Oh. LOL. 8^)
