Advantages: A fun night; A chance to win off your bets; Loads of seating and car parking
Disadvantages: Bad fast food
I don't like greyhound racing because I saw a documentary about how bad retired greyhounds are treated and killed prematurely because their owners would rather buy another dog that they can race again instead of looking after older greyhounds.
I feel proper two faced now though because I'm going to say I went to Perry Barr dog track a few nights ago and had a brill time. It's not long been totally done out so if you came years ago then you'll have a surprised when you see how bright and light the inside area is and there are loads of seats and tables for if you want something to eat.
The dog racing track is clean and kept tidy and for what it's worth the dogs all looked well cared for and the right shape for greyhounds. Some of them are walked around between races and they have all got a nice temperament and the owners looked like they looked after them well even though you can't always tell I know.
The places to put your bets on are organised good and even though there are massive cues between races they go down quick and it doesn't feel like you're hanging about too long. And it's the same if you win like I did twice, when you go to get your money it's easy to do and they pay out quick ready to start taking the bids for the next race.
There is a bar there but it's proper dear considering the dog track is in a proper dumpy area of Birmingham and the other pubs round here are dirt cheap. They sell fast food as well but it wasn't that good and was all greasy burgers and baked potatoes. I had a baked potato with cheese and it was so crap I ended up taking it back because the potato wasn't cooked properly and was still hard on one side and the cheese was dusty and didn't melt properly like it was nearly out of date.
Theres a proper restaurant in there as well where you can get a full meal but after such a bad baked potato I don't think I'd want to pay the prices in case the meal was as much as a disappointment.
There's a massive car park and there are always some empty spaces so you'll never have to park your car further away and walk down, I wouldn't recommend that anyway as Perry Barr is proper dodgy and you'll probably get your car scratched even if they don't nick it!
There are always special offers for the dog track in the Birmingham Mail and on some online websites and they are worth getting. We had an offer that got us all in with 1 free bet and a drink each and it cost £10.00 for the 4 of us and that's a bargain because I reckon the 4 drinks would have come to nearly this without anything else.
It was a good night even though the food was bad and I'd go back again but only when I can get hold of a special offer voucher to make it a bit cheaper.
Summary: I Would Go Here More Often If I Could Be Sure Of How Well The Retired Greyhounds Were Looked After
