Advantages: Good range of facilities

Disadvantages: Showers often broken

'The Heights' (not 'The Height' as in dooyoo's title) is a leisure centre located in Sandown on the Isle of Wight, which comprises a swimming pool, four squash courts, a gym / health suit, café and a crèche. As I play squash at least once a week, the courts are my primary reason to visit, although I will occasionally take a dip in the 25 metre pool.

The pool itself is reasonably maintained, although the showers in the mens changing rooms are often broken, which results in a long que to get to the one working unit at popular times There is a children's pool, although I can't comment about the quality of that as I haven't been in it for about 20 years (honest!). Swimming costs £2.90 for adults.

The Heights features a café known as 'The Bistro' which has a large glass window overlooking the swimming pool. Whilst as a venue the café isn't anything special, it does provide a fairly good selection of snacks and drinks.

The four squash courts are in good condition, and each has a balcony overlooking the playing area. If you don't own your own racket, you can hire one for free from behind the reception desk. Squash prices are £3.20 per person for a 40 minute session - which is quite reasonable when compared to some other squash centers across the country. If you want to play squash, I would advise booking in advance as it can get fairly busy - (01983) 405594.

To be honest, I haven't really used the gym or the Health Zone, but I understand that they feature an extensive range of cardiovascular and resistance equipment, giving you an all-over fitness regime.

There was recently a report in the local paper which mentioned that due to The Heights running costs, the Council were thinking about knocking it down and selling the land for housing. I really hope this isn't the case as we should be building more sporting facilites in this day and age rather than closing the ones we have got.

I highly recommend The Heights as convenient place to go and get fit and something to eat after you have done so. The centre is open all year round and has facilities for everyone - highly recommended.

Summary: Very Good Leisure Centre

Yes - it makes so much sense to knock this down for houses - NOT.
